Maritime Decarbonisation

MOVING TOWARDS CARBON NEUTRAL FUELS

Environmental concerns gained even more traction in the shipping sector during 2022. Regulatory pressure and heightened awareness of carbon emissions pushed the shipping industry to keep exploring cleaner and more sustainable options. Adoption of alternative fuels, propulsion technologies, and the implementation of stricter emissions standards became focal points for actors of the industry looking to evaluate options, emerging norms and align with global sustainability goals.

INSB Class also places a strong emphasis on promoting sustainable development. In an era where environmental concerns are paramount, INSB Class provides services and solutions that prioritize eco-friendly practices and technologies, including assessing and implementing measures to reduce emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance environmental sustainability within the maritime sector.

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR 2022, INSB CLASS EXTENDED ITS SURVEY AND CERTIFICATION SERVICES BEYOND THE CORE IMO CONVENTIONS AND CODES. We actively engaged in various environmentally related statutory instruments, providing comprehensive solutions to our clients.

Some of the key areas we covered include:

Ballast Water Management

We conducted surveys and assessments related to ballast water management, ensuring that vessels adhere to international standards for preventing the spread of invasive species through ballast water.

Inventory of Hazardous Materials and Ship Recycling

Our services included conducting surveys and issuing certifications for the Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), in compliance with the Hong Kong Convention and EU Ship Recycling Regulation. This ensures safe and environmentally sound ship recycling practices.

Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) & SEEMP

We assessed vessels’ compliance with Energy Efficiency Design Index requirements and provided approval reviews  on Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMP) to enhance energy efficiency during operations.

International Ship Energy Efficiency Certificate

Our certification services extended to providing the International Ship Energy Efficiency Certificate, which validates a vessel’s energy efficiency measures.

Fuel Oil Consumption Statement of Compliance

We examined vessels compliance with regulations concerning the monitoring, reporting, and verification of fuel oil consumption data, contributing to transparency in emissions reduction efforts.

Mandatory Annual IMO DCS Reporting

We assisted clients in complying with the mandatory annual reporting under the IMO Data Collection System (DCS), helping them track and manage their carbon emissions.

TRENDS AND INSIGHTS DURING 2022

The past operating period underlined the global multifaceted challenges and considerations that the shipping industry faces in its journey toward more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. Collaboration, innovation, and careful planning will be pivotal in navigating this complex landscape.

Some of key environmental trends of year of year 2022 included:

  • Scaling up low emissions fuels and carbon free alternatives as key enabler for decarbonisation of international shipping
  • Advances in emissions and environmental legislative context and technologies
  • Introduction of a context related to market-based measures, carbon credits & economic levies
  • Accelerated pace towards ships electrification and smart shipping
  • Methanol as key fuel of future gaining traction and preference
  • The growing acceptance of LNG as a bridge to future cleaner fuels.
  • Anticipation of major cargo owners for availability of shipping services with low or now emissions over time
  • Shipping operators are likely to experiment with various fuel types before settling on a specific mix that aligns with fleet configuration, investments, and trade patterns.
